SAMPLE THESIS PROPOSAL (HISTORICAL QUALITATIVE RESEARCH)
VIATICO PUBLICO AND ITS RELIGIOUS
CONTEXT: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE TECH FAMILY OF PASIG CITY
Introduction
Almost 200 years of existence, Bahay
na Tisa also known as “Bahay na Bato”, built along P. Gomez St. in Pasig City
plays a significant role in the rich history of the present highly-urbanized
metropolitan. Portrayed in many films and TV shows as dauntingly horrifying due
to its external appearance and the terrors brought about by the 2nd
World War, its walls has still something to tell.
Viatico Publico was an annual event
hosted by the Tech family who owns the Bahay na Tisa. It is a cultural practice
that falls after the week of Easter Sunday where the Holy Communion has been
administered to the elderlies who were sick (The Time Trekker, 2020) . A coat
of arms signifying the role of the family in the annual event was placed in the
‘silong’, where the carriages were formally kept.
The present generation who still
lives in the house was not able to keep the tradition. Last February 19, 2020,
National Museum declared that Bahay na Tisa as an Important Cultural Property.
Statement of the Problem
The study aimed to discuss the
Religious Context of Viatico Publico.
Specifically, it intended to answer
the following questions:
1. How
does the Viatico Publico inter-connected with the Tech Family?
2. What
is Viatico Publico as perceived by the following:
2.1 Tech
Family Descendants
2.2 Historical Documents (c/o Pasig City Museum)
3. What
is the cultural significance of Viatico Publico in the religious context?
4. What
are the challenges faced by the Tech family descendants in keeping the
tradition of hosting the annual Viatico Publico?
Scope and Limitation
The study focused on the Viatico
Publico’s Religious Context as narrated by the Tech Family. The study was
conducted during the Academic Year of 2020-2021. The informants for the study
were the Tech Family Descendants and Pasig City Museum (for the Historical Documents).
The researcher concentrated only on
the narratives from the Tech Family as well as the existing historical
documents from the Pasig City Museum.
Methodology
Qualitative
Research was utilized in the study where the researcher conducted an interview to
the Tech Family descendants, as well as the Pasig City Museum for the
historical documents. The sampling technique was Purposive Sampling since the
primary consideration of the study was based on the narratives and existing
historical documents. The data gathering process took place in Pasig City in
April, 2021.
Interview
Guide Questions, Audio Recorder and Transcript of Interviews were used to
interpret the data gathered for the authenticity of the results.
The
Interview Guide Questions were approved under the mentorship of Dr. Henelito A.
Sevilla Jr. PhD, the course Professor in PS 201 and an expert in Middle-Eastern
studies.
The
researcher close-coordinated with the Local Government Unit, specifically the
Administration of Pasig City Museum to connect with the descendants of the Tech
Family. Upon the approval for the interview schedule, the researcher advanced
to the data gathering procedure.
Review
of Related Literature and Studies
Guzman (2020)
stated that Bahay na Tisa has played a vital role in history as it was being
declared as an ‘Important Cultural Property’. For seven generations, the family
hosted significant events that shaped the historyof Pasig City. The article is
significant to the research since it discussed the details on what have
transpired in its 200 years of existence.
Sánchez Gómez (1998) studied that the Filipinos who
belong to the ‘Principalia’ resided in pueblos, whose houses were made with
sturdy materials. The specifications, area as well as the design of old
colonial houses were based on the economic situation of the family. The study
is relevant to the research because the Tech family belongs to the same social
class, and Bahay na Tisa itself is a living proof of the family’s contribution
to the society.
Harper
(2020) stated that the preservation of colonial structures gives a different
sense of identity to the Philippines. It reiterates that only through
understanding the past, people are able to understand the present. Bahay na
Tisa and its owners have contributed helped establish the identity of former
agricultural land and now a modernized City.
Blancaflor
(2018) indicated that the Spanish influence in the Philippines is still evident
regardless of more than a Century of Independence. The Tech family is a mixed
of Filipino and Spanish blood in which it greatly influenced their customs and
tradition, whose forefather was a Spanish native.
Rees
(2017) discussed that believers who belong to the same community are more
likely to share the same cultural practices as well as traditions. Viatico
Publico, is an annual event participated by the Roman Catholic dwellers in
Pasig City, who highly venerates the celebration of Easter.
